MRDO prepared an updated report on the situation following the Elinino floods in Hirshabelle, particularly regarding the increased prevalence of AWD (Acute Watery Diarrhea) diseases in the minority riverine areas in the northwest of Beletweyne.
The AWD outbreak in the region has continued to worsen, affecting the minority communities residing in the riverine areas of Beletweyne. Regrettably, since the last report, the number of fatalities has increased. As of the latest update, we have recorded a total of 11 deaths attributed to AWD diseases in these areas.
In response to the outbreak, the MRDO team has been dispatched to the minority and marginalized villages in the riverine areas. Their primary objective is to provide assistance, medical care, and support to the affected communities. However, despite their efforts, two children in Ala-amin IDP site within the minority community lost their lives due to AWD last week.
In light of these activities, the MRDO is planning to implement a comprehensive awareness campaign targeting all riverine villages. The aim is to educate the communities about AWD prevention measures and promote proper hygiene practices. One of the primary focus areas will be the promotion of hand-washing practices to discourage the use of contaminated river water and ensure the consumption of clean food. This initiative will be an integral part of the MRDO’s mission in the minority riverine areas of Beletweyne.
The MRDO team is committed to working closely with the affected communities, local authorities, and other relevant stakeholders to mitigate the spread of AWD diseases and provide necessary support. Their efforts will include the distribution of hygiene kits, the establishment of clean water sources, and the provision of medical treatment to affected individuals.
It is essential to recognize the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life. Humanitarian support in the form of medical supplies, clean water, and financial assistance would greatly aid the ongoing efforts to combat the AWD outbreak and provide relief to the affected communities.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available. If you have any further questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to reach out. Or leave us comments in our website
